Be Innocent of Evil

Ephesians 1:13-14 BSB

And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the pledge of our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession, to the praise of His glory.

we all receive the Holy Spirit the moment we choose to believe in Christ and the gospel. When we follow him, the Holy Spirit marks our hearts and becomes our guide.

Jesus himself spoke of the purpose of the Holy Spirit who would be with each believer:

John 16:13-14 BSB

However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come. He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you.

He also said:

John 14:26 BSB

But the Advocate, the Holy spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have told you.

The Holy Spirit is the spirit of sonship. It makes our hearts long after God and what God wants for us. This calls us to spiritual growth and oneness with the ways of God. We must not longer live by the desires of our flesh but by the desires of God’s Spirit dwelling within us.

Romans 8:13-15 BSB

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”

We must have the same desires as God. Our desires come in to alignment with God’s desires when we have the Holy Spirit inside of us.

We become uncomfortable in sin or surrounded by sin because of God’s holiness when the spirit of God loves inside of us.

Romans 12:9b

Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

The holy spirit helps us love what God loves and hate what God hates. It is automatic once we become His. We must then choose to submit in every circumstance we feel his conviction.

Romans 16:19b-20a BSB

I want you to be wise about what is good and innocent about what is evil. The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.

When we are wise about what is good and innocent of evil, the Lord crushes Satan under our feet. When we listen to the spirit, we dwell in Christ, putting us in the biblical place of blessing and His blessing is with us as Psalm 127 details:

Psalms 127:1-2 BSB

Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain; unless the Lord protects the city, its watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for bread to eat— for He gives sleep to His beloved.

Let us listen to the Spirit, let us pull away from the world and submit to God so we hear the spirit inside frying out, “Abba! Father!”

Let us be like Samuel as a boy, ready to say, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.”
